About Chess Online Multiplayer

Chess Multiplayer is classic chess with plenty of ways to find an opponent. You can take on the computer, play against people from around the world, invite a friend to a game, or share one screen and take turns on the same device. The rules are the standard ones, and the aim is checkmate: trapping the enemy king so it is under attack with no legal move to escape.

The computer opponent comes in 21 difficulty levels, from Beginner to World Champion, and time controls run through Unlimited, Bullet, Blitz, Rapid and Classic. Learning aids are built in: possible moves can be highlighted, a mistaken move can be cancelled, interactive hints suggest the best move, and a post-game analysis points out errors. You can also restyle the pieces and board, set handicaps, follow your rating and statistics, and send cartoon emotions to your opponent.

How to play Chess Online Multiplayer

Objective

Checkmate your opponent's king, leaving it attacked with no legal escape, whether you face the computer, a friend or players from around the world.

Controls

Desktop

  • Click: select a piece, then click its target square

Mobile

  • Tap and drag: move a piece straight to its new square

Getting started

  1. Choose how to play: against the computer, against other players, with a friend, or together on the same screen.
  2. Against the computer, pick a difficulty from Beginner to World Champion and decide whether to use a handicap or hints.
  3. For a game with a friend, set a time control such as Unlimited, Blitz or Bullet before the first move.
  4. Move by clicking a piece and then its target square, or by tapping and dragging it on a phone.
  5. When the game ends, open the post-game analysis to see exactly where your mistakes crept in.

Tips

  • Start against the lower difficulty levels with move highlighting on, then climb through the 21 levels as your results improve.
  • Lean on hints and move cancelling while you learn, then play a few games without them to see how much has stuck.
  • Review every loss in the post-game analysis; seeing the better move at the moment things went wrong is a quick way to improve.
  • Pick Unlimited when you want to think through each position, and save Bullet or Blitz for when the openings feel familiar.
