About Word Solitaire

Word Solitaire keeps the shape of a solitaire game but replaces the familiar suits with words. Each level starts with a partly filled board and a deck to draw from, one card at a time. Some cards are category cards, which name a theme, and the rest are word cards that belong to one of those themes. A category stack can only begin once its category card is on the board, and after that you add every related word card to complete the set.

The catch is a move limit. To win, every card has to be sorted into its theme before the moves run out. The level is lost if the limit is reached or if the board ends up with no valid move left. As you advance, levels give you fewer moves, add more categories and use trickier words, so planning matters more each time. An undo option lets you take back the last action, and completed levels count toward a leaderboard of the ten most active players.

How to play Word Solitaire

Objective

Sort every word card into its category stack, starting each stack with its category card, before you run out of moves.

Controls

Desktop

  • Click: draw cards and place them on the board

Mobile

  • Tap: draw cards and place them on the board

Getting started

  1. Look over the partly filled board at the start of the level and note which category cards are already showing.
  2. Draw the top card from the deck with a click or a tap and decide where it belongs.
  3. Place a category card first whenever you draw one, since word cards need it before their stack can start.
  4. Add each related word card to its category stack, watching the move counter as you go.
  5. Keep sorting until every card sits in its thematic group, and use undo if a move goes wrong.

Tips

  • A word card is stuck until its category card is out, so get category cards onto the board as early as you can.
  • Moves are limited, so think about where a card goes before placing it rather than shuffling it around later.
  • Undo takes back the last action, which is worth using whenever a placement wastes one of your few moves.
  • Later levels bring more categories and fewer moves, so keep track of which themes are still waiting for words.
  • Watch for a board with no valid next move; it ends the level just as surely as an empty move counter.

Word Solitaire FAQ

How do you win a level of Word Solitaire?

Get every card into the right thematic group before the move limit runs out. Each group starts with a category card, and all of its related word cards are then added to complete the set.

How can you lose?

A level is lost when you use up all your moves or when the board reaches a state with no valid next move. Careful placement and the undo option help avoid both.

Does it get harder?

Yes. With each stage you get fewer moves, the board shows more categories, and the words become more complex, so the associations take more thought.
