About Roots and Wheels

Roots and Wheels is an off-road delivery game where the cargo is the score. You start in a military Ural truck loaded with boxes, and the job is to bring as many of them as possible across a difficult track to the finish line. Routes throw mud, steep climbs and even a wrecked bridge at you, so getting there is as much about picking a sensible path and pace as it is about the truck's power.

Driving uses just two inputs, one to go forward and one to go back, so the skill lies in throttle control and timing. Money from finished deliveries goes into the truck's engine, suspension and wheels, or you can save it to buy new vehicles. Each new model has its own capabilities and opens up new mission types and cargo, which lets the fleet grow along with your off-road skills.

How to play Roots and Wheels

Objective

Drive your truck across each off-road track to the finish line and deliver as many boxes as possible, then spend the money on upgrades or new vehicles.

Controls

Desktop

  • D: move forward
  • A: move backward

Mobile

  • Right touch pedal: move forward
  • Left touch pedal: move backward

Getting started

  1. Begin with the military Ural, loaded with boxes, at the start of the first track.
  2. Press D or the right touch pedal to move forward, easing off before bumps so the load stays aboard.
  3. Use A or the left pedal to roll backward when a climb fails or you need another run at an obstacle.
  4. Pick a careful line through mud, steep hills and broken bridges, thinking ahead rather than flooring it.
  5. Reach the finish line, collect your money and spend it on engine, suspension or wheel upgrades.

Tips

  • Your result depends on how many boxes reach the finish, so a slower, smoother run usually beats a fast one that shakes cargo loose.
  • With only forward and backward controls, momentum does the work: roll back a little and build speed before a steep climb instead of crawling at it.
  • Upgrade the suspension and wheels as well as the engine, since rough terrain rather than top speed is what stands between you and the finish.
  • Saving up for a new vehicle is worthwhile, because each model brings its own capabilities and unlocks new mission types and cargo.

Roots and Wheels FAQ

How do you drive in Roots and Wheels on a phone?

Use the two touch pedals on the screen: the right pedal moves the truck forward and the left pedal moves it backward. On a computer the same job falls to D for forward and A for backward. No other driving inputs are listed.

What is the goal of each level in Roots and Wheels?

Deliver the largest possible number of boxes to the finish. The tracks are complex off-road routes with mud, steep climbs and damaged bridges, so the challenge is to keep your cargo while finding the best way through difficult spots.

What can you buy with money in Roots and Wheels?

Money from deliveries pays for improvements to your machines, such as the engine, suspension and wheels, or for entirely new vehicles. Each new model has its own capabilities and gives access to new mission types and cargo.
