About Defend the Castle
Defend the Castle puts your castle in the middle of a square grid, with a river, wooden bridges, forest tiles and a gem vein around it. Each round has two phases. In the build phase you pick a card from the right-hand panel (Wall, Archer, Cannon, Woodcutter or Mine) and click squares to place it, paying in gold and wood. Then Start Wave sends green blob-like enemies in from the map edges; they chew through any wall in their path and pound the castle, whose 1000 health points do not refill between waves.
What sets it apart is how much changes from run to run. A second game produced a different map layout, The King's Gambit offers a harder wave for a bigger payout before wave 4 and again before wave 7, and new enemy colours join from wave 3 and wave 5. Defeat ends the run, but the Royal Medals earned from wave 3 onward stay behind and buy permanent unlocks in the Royal Armory, including the Tar Pit, the Frost Spire and the Rallying Cry.

How to play Defend the Castle
Objective
Keep the castle's 1000 health points above zero through as many waves as possible, since the waves never stop. The Defeat screen then reports how many waves you survived, your final score and the Royal Medals you take into the next run.
Controls
Desktop
- Mouse: click a card in the right-hand panel, then click a grid square to build it there
- W, A and C keys: pick the Wall, Archer tower or Cannon tower without opening the panel
- Click a tower, then press U: upgrade it (first archer upgrade 50 gold and 10 wood, the next 100 gold and 20 wood)
- Space or the Start Wave button: send the next wave
- Undo arrow beside Start Wave: removes everything placed in the current build phase and refunds the cost
- Medal counter at the top left: opens the Royal Armory
Mobile
- Tap a card under the map, then tap a square: build it
- Start Wave in the bottom bar: send the next wave
Getting started
- Press Start Game on the title card, which also lists the keyboard shortcuts; you begin with 145 gold, 80 wood and a castle at full health.
- Place two Archer towers right beside the castle, since enemies can arrive from the left, the top and the right of the map.
- Press Start Wave or Space and watch the routes the blobs take; the first wave took about 120 health off the castle with two archers in place.
- Spend the payout between waves: walls at 10 wood each across the approaches, an upgrade with U, and a Woodcutter on a forest tile.
- Before wave 4 The King's Gambit appears; choose Berserker's Rage, Iron Horde or No Gambit, Play It Safe to continue.
- When the castle falls, read the Defeat screen, open the Royal Armory to spend medals, then press Play Again.
Tips
- Cover every side of the castle: enemies came in from the left, top and right edges, and the wave where most walls sat on the left side alone cost 205 health.
- Walls cost only wood and enemies stop to break them, so refill the gaps after every wave; the wall in the busiest approach fell twice in four waves.
- Build the Woodcutter early on a forest tile because it pays wood every wave, and take Iron Horde when your towers are strong to bank 100 extra wood.
- Medals arrive at one per wave from wave 3, so a seven-wave run banks only a few; the 15-medal Tar Pit is the first Armory unlock within reach.
- Castle health never comes back, so invest before it drops: a castle at 305 health after wave 5 lasted just two more waves.

Defend the Castle FAQ
How do you earn Royal Medals in Defend the Castle?
Medals come from surviving waves. In one run the counter stayed at zero through waves 1 and 2, then rose by one after each wave from wave 3. They are kept after a defeat and spent in the Royal Armory on the Tar Pit (15), Frost Spire (90), Rallying Cry (165) and stat upgrades.
What does The King's Gambit do?
It is an optional dare offered before some waves, first before wave 4 and again before wave 7. Berserker's Rage gives enemies 30 percent faster attacks for 50 percent more gold per kill, Iron Horde gives them 25 percent more health for 100 extra wood, and No Gambit leaves the wave unchanged.
Can you play Defend the Castle on a phone?
Yes. In portrait the map sits at the top, the Wall, Archer, Cannon, Woodcutter and Mine cards sit underneath, and the bottom bar holds gold, wood, castle health, the undo arrow and Start Wave. Tap a card, then a square, to build. The squares are small, so place towers with care.
What are the Woodcutter and the Mine for?
Both work only on special tiles. A Woodcutter Hut on a forest tile adds extra wood after every wave and can be upgraded for more. A Gem Mine on the gem vein collects bonus gold from enemies killed inside its range. The Woodcutter costs 75 gold and the Mine 100 gold.
