About Number Sums

Number Sums gives you a board of numbers and a set of targets. Clues along the sides tell you what each row and column must add up to, and further clues sit inside colored regions spread across the grid. Your job is to decide which numbers stay and which go, so that each row, column and region reaches its total at once.

The tools are deliberately minimal. A toggle switches between circling mode, for numbers you are sure belong, and erasing mode, for the surplus ones you want to rule out. Each puzzle has exactly one solution, so the constraints always interlock and a choice in one row ripples into the columns and regions around it. Boards range from 3x3 to 10x10 across several difficulty levels, which makes it a steady workout for addition and logic.

How to play Number Sums

Objective

Circle the numbers that belong and erase the rest so that every row, column and colored region matches its clue, finding the board's single solution.

Getting started

  1. Read the side clues for rows and columns, plus the clue inside each colored region, to see every target sum.
  2. Boards range from 3x3 up to 10x10, so get comfortable with the rules on a small grid before tackling the big ones.
  3. Use the toggle to pick circling mode and mark the numbers you are certain must count toward a sum.
  4. Switch the toggle to erasing mode and remove numbers that would push a row, column or region past its target.
  5. Keep checking all three kinds of constraint together until every line and region matches, which completes the level.

Tips

  • Settle the easy lines first: a row whose target equals the total of all its numbers, or one that only a single combination can reach.
  • Since each level has only one solution, a number that fits a row but breaks its colored region must be erased, so always check both.
  • Use erasing mode as actively as circling; ruling out surplus numbers narrows the remaining options for every line they share.
  • Glance at the region clues on every pass, because they sit inside the board and are easy to forget while you focus on the side totals.

Number Sums FAQ

What are the rules of Number Sums?

Every row and column must add up to the clue on the side of the board, and every colored region must match the clue inside it. You circle the numbers that count and erase the ones that do not, until all of those sums work together.

What does the toggle do?

It switches between circling mode and erasing mode. Circling marks numbers you are confident belong in a sum, while erasing marks the extra numbers you do not need, which helps you keep track of what is confirmed and what is ruled out.

How big do Number Sums boards get?

Boards go from 3x3 up to 10x10, across various difficulty levels. Larger boards mean more rows, columns and regions to satisfy at once, though each level still has exactly one possible solution.
