About LifeCode

LifeCode is set in an abandoned laboratory after an incident in the Zone forced everyone out. Before leaving, the staff sabotaged the data storage, and the A.R.C.H core, an artificial intelligence now heading for a catastrophic overload, needs someone to recover what was lost. It picks you, the one creature in the facility able to listen, think and act. Your job is to export memory data while the other monsters, wild and hungry, see you only as food.

Each day starts at 10:00 AM at your base, where you set the antenna angle that decides how much memory an export yields. In the lab you find an M3N, a Memory Export Node, start its export and scavenge while it runs, picking up food, flashlights and medical supplies from crates. Exports and Control Core functions pay N-Neutrons, spent at vending machines. The layout is rebuilt from modules every playthrough, monsters are far more common at night, and staying inside past midnight kills you and wipes everything you carried.

How to play LifeCode

Objective

Fill the memory bar for A.R.C.H by running M3N exports in the laboratory, activate Control Core functions at your base, and always get out before midnight.

Controls

Desktop

  • W, A, S, D: move
  • Space: jump
  • Left Shift: run
  • E: interact
  • NUM1 to NUM5: select inventory slots 1 to 5
  • Z or left mouse button: left-hand punch
  • X or right mouse button: right-hand punch
  • F: turn on or use
  • C: turn off
  • Q: drop an item
  • P: pause or open the menu

Getting started

  1. At 10:00 AM in your base, adjust the antenna angle as accurately as you can, since alignment sets how much memory each export brings.
  2. Enter the laboratory, find an M3N and activate its first export phase, which keeps running for 2 to 5 minutes.
  3. While it runs, search crates for food, flashlights and medical supplies, and keep clear of the hungry monsters.
  4. When the M3N finishes, activate Phase Two for extra memory, and return to base once the memory bar is full.
  5. Activate a Control Core function at the base, then, once daytime is over, rest on the old mattress back in the room where you started.

Tips

  • Treat the 11:00 PM siren as your final warning: emergency lights come on to guide you, and staying past midnight costs every item and all stored memory.
  • Spend time on the antenna, because in Phase Two its angle multiplies an M3N's output of up to 424 KB by anything from 0.5 to 5.
  • Control Core functions are the big payouts, worth 110N to 190N for the first and 210N to 340N for the second, far more than starting an export.
  • Monster encounters become much more likely at night, so do the long, risky searches in daylight and head back early as evening approaches.
  • The lab is rebuilt from pre-designed modules each run, so learn how the modules look rather than memorising one fixed map.

LifeCode FAQ

How do you earn N-Neutrons in LifeCode?

Starting an M3N export gives 3N to 8N on Normal difficulty, and completing the export with Phase Two gives 50N to 65N. Once the memory bar is full, Control Core functions pay far more: 110N to 190N for the first and 210N to 340N for the second.

What happens if you stay in the lab past midnight?

Your character dies, and every collected item plus all stored memory is lost. At 11:00 PM a siren goes off and emergency lighting comes on to guide you toward the exit, so treat that as the moment to leave.

Does the laboratory change each time?

Yes. It is put together from pre-designed modules by procedural generation, so each playthrough has a new layout, though the familiar modules mean you can still learn your way around.

How do you end a day in LifeCode?

Head back to base and lie down on the old mattress in the room where the day began. You cannot sleep while it is still daytime, so rest is only possible once those hours are over.
