Backrooms: Exit Protocol 0 takes place in Level 0, the first layer of the backrooms, a maze of halls with no obvious exit. You are trapped inside, and getting out takes three things: finding the keycard, working through the puzzles between you and the exit, and avoiding the monster that shares the space with you.
You have a full set of movement options to work with. You can walk, run, jump and crouch, pick up and use objects, and drop an item when you want to carry something else. A camera zoom on the computer helps with reading details at a distance. Those options matter because the monster is a threat rather than a target; no attack appears among the controls, so running away and crouching out of sight are your tools. Computers use keys and the mouse, and phones get a joystick, on-screen buttons and camera control on the right side of the screen.

Getting started
- Start in Level 0 and look around before moving; on a phone, the right side of the screen turns the camera.
- Walk the halls with W A S D, the arrow keys or the joystick, and keep track of where you have already been.
- Use E, or the button with the E icon, to interact with anything that might lead to the keycard.
- When a puzzle blocks the way, solve it before moving on, since puzzles stand between you and the exit.
- If the monster appears, run with Shift or the Run button, or crouch to stay out of its path.
Tips
- The keycard is the key goal, so search rooms methodically instead of wandering, and remember the halls you have cleared.
- Running with Shift gets you away fast, so save it for the moment the monster closes in rather than sprinting everywhere.
- Crouching with C helps you hide and keep clear of the monster when there is nowhere left to run.
- Drop an item with R if you need to pick up something more useful, rather than leaving the better object behind.
- Zoom the camera with the right mouse button to read details in the distance before walking into an unknown hall.
